This is how to level your scope like a pro. This method is no big secret and has been used successfully for decades.

You may be wondering why I’m running the clock down on a process set in stone. There are two reasons for my mental lapse in judgment. First, I have a bit of a twist that makes this more precise. Second, it is so hot outside today that the devil himself would turn on the air conditioner.

Step one

purchase a barrel vice. You can buy a very high-quality product without breaking the bank. You don’t even have to mount it to a bench. (At your own risk.) I attach mine to my computer desk with a pair of C-clamps. That’s impressive, given my rifle has a weight problem, and should get a membership at Jenny Craig.

Step two.

Remove your barrel/action from the stock of the rifle. (The twist) Then insert it into the barrel vice. It will probably take less than five minutes to do these two steps.

Why do this at all?

Stocks are not always straight, and sometimes bedding jobs are worthless. Especially in factory guns. Even if everything was initially done correctly at the factory, you’re still going to have to mess around to get it lined up.

Step three

put a Wheeler level on top of your scope mount or the back of your action. Rotate the barrel in the vice until the bubble is centered. Then tighten the vice bolts.

Please pay particular attention to the level as you tighten the vise; sometimes, it tends to move a little bit. Now, your action, mount, and scope rings are correctly aligned.

Step four

Place your level on top of your scope turret, and turn the scope until it’s centered. Tighten your rings down to the point that you cannot rotate your optic. Now all your components are correctly aligned.

Step five

We are almost done:

I recommend purchasing a Vortex scope bubble in the correct size and installing it to your optic. Later, when you are sliding your optic to set your eye relief, you don’t inadvertently undo everything you have worked hard to accomplish.

Several companies make scope bubble levels. I just mentioned Vortex because that’s what I use. It is really up to you which product to purchase. You need to make sure that it is the correct size.

For example, my scope has a 1-inch tube. So I bought the corresponding scope level. I hope that makes sense. If it doesn’t, firearms may not be for you.

You are well on your way in the riflescope series. Now you know how to level your scope like a pro.

I know this stuff may seem like a lot, but everything will become clear the first time you pull that trigger at a long distance and connect with the target.

Still, to this day, I get that little tingly feeling when that happens. Now it is time to read, How to Set your Eye Relief like a Pro, in the riflescope series.
