Having your eye relief and reticle focus set correctly on your scope is essential. Hitting a target is hard enough without lacking a full site picture and having blurry crosshairs. This article will teach you how to set up your scope eye relief (site picture) and reticle focus.
Step One
Place yourself behind the rifle in the position you usually shoot. I like to lay down in the back of my garage. That way, I don’t freak out my neighbors. Turn your optics magnification up. Find something downrange to view. Next, slide your optic back and forth until you have a full site picture. This is known as setting your eye relief.
Step Two
After you have the proper eye relief, tighten the ring screws until the scope no longer slides. Don’t torque them to the manufacturer’s specifications yet.
Step Three
Locate a plain background. I usually use a piece of computer paper on a 100-yard target board. Some people will point their rifles at the sky on a clear day, but that’s a pain. It also makes other people at the range nervous.
Step Four
Now, it is time to focus on the cross-hair of your scope. (Reticle) You can locate the reticle focus on the back of your eyepiece.
Looking through your optic at the plain background, rotate the eyepiece focus until the crosshairs become clear. When complete, your eye relief and crosshair focus are good to go.
Tip:
You want to have it focused immediately when you Put your eye on the scope. It would be best to look away every two or three seconds when performing this step. If you keep staring at the reticle, your eyes will adjust even if it’s not focused correctly. I hope this makes sense.
You have almost completed setting up your scope.
